Hi there
I hope this update finds you well.
The theme for this update is County Donegal. It is one of my favourite places in Ireland. A location with so many stunning spots that it is very hard to decide where to photograph. Especially when every time I go there, I find new candidates.
On location in Donegal
Summer in Ireland is an interesting time of year, weather wise. You never really know what you are going to get. The weather forecast can only be described as indicative, and no matter where you are, the local weather can vary wildly from what was predicted. I recently returned to County Donegal to shoot a few locations that I had discovered from a previous trip. To say the weather was mixed would be an understatement. Glorious sunshine, storm force winds, and rain that fell for the entire day, was the pattern for my stay. But hey! Who doesn’t like a challenge!
Driving can be tricky too, with narrow roads and very questionable speed limits.

So this trip I headed back to Crohy to check out whether the conditions might be good to try another sunset shoot. It looked promising. As it was dark the last time I was here, I thought I would also explore the rest of Crohy Head. Driving up and down a few hills and then around a corner, bang, I was struck by this stunning scene. Time to get the camera out!

And here are some of the fruits of my labour…

I still have other photographs from my trip to work on, and I hope to be able to share those with you soon.
You may have noticed that weather is a recurring theme in my updates, and you would be correct. It would be fair to say that you can’t be a landscape photographer in Ireland without being obsessed by the weather. Forecasts end up being works of fiction, local weather can be very different to what was predicted or the complete opposite of what the weather app says it is. All very challenging when you are trying to plan a shoot and relying on nature to give you the conditions that you want for a particular shot. In my mind weather is a mood, and a scene can be greatly enhanced when the mood is just right. The hard part is deciding what mood suits a particular scene then planning to be there when the weather is just right and also recognising that sometimes the weather just does it’s own thing.
