About the photograph - Ben Gorm Rain

Ben Gorm Rain

The wonderful thing about exploring the west of Ireland is that practically around every corner you are met with a wonderful vista. And on this occasion I was making my way back from the spectacular Doo Lough Valley when I chose to take an alternative route back to Co. Galway (The Tawnyard Trail) to explore the compact Ben Gorm range. As with most mountain locations, the weather can change very quickly, and this was no exception. One moment I was admiring the scene stretching from Tawnyard Lough up the valley up to the crescent shaped peak of Ben Gorm which was backlight by sunshine when in what seemed like a blink of an eye, the foreground valley was cast into shadow and the illuminated peak was diffused by a curtain of rain. Together all these elements came together to create a wonderful contrast and an unusual scene. I'm very glad I was there to capture it.

Ben Gorm is a 700 m high mountain in southwest County Mayo, Ireland, on the northern shore of Killary Harbour.
