About the photograph

Doolough Valley in early Autumn

When it comes to places in Ireland that I just love, this is one! I'm not even referring to its photogenic qualities here, I just love the way everything just works for me, the mountains, the lake, the lake shore drive, the history (see below), even the great coffee and carrot cake from the coffee van. I don't manage to make it to the valley every time I'm in Connemara, but when I can, I love nothing more than going to the north end of the valley and looking back to admire the breathtaking view while finishing my great coffee and cake.

On this visit I was there to photograph and I was fortunate that many things were in my favour for a good shot. The weather was being nice to me. The autumn afternoon sun was still high enough to illuminate most of the valley, but also low enough to cast some shadow for contrast. The light was nice, as light in autumn is a little softer than that found in summer. There were clouds providing a bit of drama and interest for the sky, and were low enough to nearly hide the top of Ben Gorm. And finally as it wasn't the height of tourist season, it was pretty quiet.

Doolough Valley is located in south Co. Mayo and is comprised of two lakes nestled in by high mountain peaks creating an unspoilt and natural location that is truly breathtaking. It is also one of the more poignant locations on the Wild Atlantic Way with the famine memorial marking one of the most tragic events in Irish history, The Great Famine which occurred during the mid 19th century.
